                                                  Home Maintenance Tips for All

Buying a home is dream for everyone. It is the place where a family lives together under one roof and builds bond with each other.  One spends a big fortune on buying their home especially first one. Therefore it becomes very important to ensure that their home is safe and cost effective also.

There are few simple tips that we can do on regular basis to make our home safe and add more value to it. Following are the tips recommended by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

1. Furnaces should be checked and cleaned on regular basis, if possible, once a month. This helps saving electricity also.

2. Get the quality of water tested on regular basis.

3  There should be a reasonable distance between ground around your house and the foundation wall. This helps prevent water from draining into the basement.

4. Thoroughly clean the roofs from all possible areas to ensure proper drainage happens from all corners of the roof. Also, thoroughly inspect roofs and chimneys to see if there are any obstructions stuck there or if shingles needs to be replaced.  In case of any damages, use a trusted professional help quickly to fix the problem.

5.  As weather is becoming warmer, there will be ants all around. Therefore, use a good quality pesticide to get rid of this menace before they damage your house.

6. To tackle summer humidity, use a de-humidifier in basement areas and early fall months when your home is not being heated.  This will help to control general moisture conditions in your home and will reduce the incidence of molds / mildews. (Source- Canadian Home Inspections)

7. Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas which can cause health problems and high levels of exposure can be fatal. Use carbonmono oxide detectors if your home has gas, oil or wood burning appliances, or if your home has an attached garage.  Unborn and young children are the most susceptible to accidents happening due to this gas. So keep safe!!!

8.  Home inspections are a necessity for anyone looking to sell or purchase a property, but especially if the property in question is a home. Choosing someone qualified to perform home inspections will ensure that not only will the results of the home inspection be thorough, but that the risk of future complications – potentially costly – will be reduced as much as possible.

9.  We all love kids. Our first and foremost duty is towards making our house a safe haven for our kids. We should ensure that doorknob covers are installed to prevent children from opening the door handle. Also, guards should be installed to keep children from pinching their fingers in electricity pins.

10. As the weather is getting warmer, it’s a good time to be outside doing a little maintenance on your property. Inspect your driveway, walks and steps for any cracks or deterioration. Seal your asphalt, if required. Repair all cracked concrete. Concrete or asphalt driveways and walks are extremely expensive to replace. Open, unrepaired cracks allow water entry which will result in more rapid deterioration of these surfaces. These repairs will also help provide a level, safe walking surface for your family and guests. (Source- Canadian Residential Home Inspections)
